It started with values.

The Challenge
Company values are the hardest thing to teach. Write them on posters and they’re wallpaper by Friday. Merit Data & Technology wanted its people to genuinely understand what the company’s values look like in practice — in a decision, in a difficult conversation, in the everyday moments where values either show up or don’t.
What we Built
We built Merit’s values course the way we build everything: around people, not posters. Instead of defining each value in the abstract, we created a cast of characters — colleagues who feel like the people Merit employees actually work with — and put them in real situations where the values get tested. Learners don’t read about integrity; they watch a character choose it under pressure, and decide what they’d do themselves.
Then Something Interesting Happened
-
Intermediate & Advanced Excel functional skills, taught through the day-to-day work the characters (and learners) actually do
-
Writing Effective Emails watching a familiar character mangle an email is a better teacher than any style guide
-
Mastering 1-1 Meetings both sides of the table, played out by characters learners already trust
Why a Shared Cast Works
Zero re-introduction cost: Learners skip the “who are these people?” setup every new course usually pays for. Familiar faces mean faster starts.
Relatability compounds: Characters mirror Merit’s real workplace, so every scenario lands close to home — one of our core design beliefs: real beats fake.
It builds a brand: A consistent cast, visual style, and tone make the library feel like Merit’s own in-house learning brand, not off-the-shelf content.
It rewards continuity: Each new course strengthens the last. The universe gets richer as the library grows.
The Outcome
What began as a single values module is now an ongoing partnership and a growing learning library with its own identity — characters, world, and voice — that Merit’s people recognize the moment a new course opens. That’s what we mean by long-term partnership: the best projects don’t end; they get renewed.
